艾瑞克亚历山大的成功并非侥倖得来。他深刻的研究许多杰出前辈的作品，又有哈洛德玛本（Harold Mabern）这样大师级的恩师兼合作伙伴，对於爵士传统瞭解深刻，又努力追寻属於自己的音色，因此在爵士乐界儼然已经成为一号重要人物。由於他在日本两家唱片公司均有发行作品，因此在日本大受欢迎。日本爵士杂誌Swing Jornal推出的读者点歌企划就以他为主题，让读者们选出自己希望听到他吹奏的歌单。这张专辑就是这歌单的呈现。制作人原哲夫原本定下两天的录音室预备录制，结果在一天之内就顺利完成，真可谓神乎其技。
为何能有如此顺利的录音？本专辑乐手分别来自艾瑞克亚历山大的两个固定演出团体，早有多年的合作默契。钢琴手David Hazeltine来自六重奏Good For All，而贝斯手John Webber来自他在纽约的四重奏乐团，鼓手Joe Farnsworth则是同样两个乐团都有出席的好友。这几位乐手同时也是当今爵士乐界的要角，说是全明星阵容一点不为过。
一天录制完成的专辑会不会有粗制滥造之嫌？当你听到这张唱片时，相信您的疑虑也会烟消云散。艾瑞克亚历山大早已经琢磨出一种温暖又流畅的独特音色，加上他对於爵士经典的熟稔，演奏这些曲子真是轻鬆写意。从Steve Turrentine的名曲「Sugar」开场，充满朝气的激进演出，搭配几位乐手火力全开般的热情，让人感受到近年爵士乐中少有的青春活力；而「Stella By Starlight」、「My Favorite Things」这般的标準曲更是畅快淋漓。就算是Bossa Nova名作「Triste」，由这乐团演奏也能让人感受到如南国骄阳般的热力四射。专辑结尾曲是艾瑞克亚历山大的偶像约翰柯川的作品「Lazy Bird」，致敬之意不言而喻。不可不听的是Sonny Rollins名曲「Airegin」，快速如机关枪、跳跃如羚羊般的吹奏只能用神乎其技四字描述！
这是少数在日本录制的Venus专辑，不过经由它们独家「Hyper Magnum Sound」的处理，优秀的录音品质依然耀眼，任何一个乐手演奏的微小细节都没放过，成功重现这个热情洋溢的名演。这样的企划、这样的音乐、这样的制作品质，当然在一推出就获得了Swing Journal的金唱片推荐！

Eric Alexander is in top form throughout this 2007 quartet session with some of his favorite bandmates, including David Hazeltine, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, all four of whom are members of the group One for All and regular participants on the Manhattan jazz scene in clubs and studios. The big-toned tenor saxophonist covers a lot of bases, including several standards, works by jazz greats (all tenor players), and a bossa nova. Though John Coltrane has been an obvious influence on some earlier recordings, he has developed his own sound, blending ideas from past artists with his own. The rhapsodic treatment of "Stella by Starlight" is one highlight, and while he opts for the famous Coltrane modal setting of "My Favorite Things," he doesn't linger in getting to the conclusion of its theme. His turbocharged take of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin" is fueled by his fiery rhythm section, while Hazeltine's soulful, lush accompaniment is the perfect backdrop for the leader in the moving "Lover Man." Another fine date by Eric Alexander, one of the best saxophonists of his generation.

This is another stellar release by Eric Alexander, this one on the Japanese Venus label. He has very familiar sidemen, David Haziltine on piano, John Webber bass, Joe Farnsworth on drums.There are no originals on this album, just a bunch of standards played with the big fat sound that Eric gets from his horn. While I love a great quintet or sextet , Alexander really excels in the quartet as his sound is so commanding to easily keep the listener enthralled. Hazeltine is also very sweet on this CD, inspired. Song selection as usual for Eric is great, nice mix of uptempo numbers like "lazy Bird" and ballads. The version of "My Favorite Things" makes me want to go camp out in a jazz club in hopes of hearing something similar. The best description of this album is one word, awesome! If he does not blow you away with "Lover Man" then you may he dead. Eric to me is like the Bill Charlap of the tenor sax. He takes these standards and redefines them and reminds you why these are standards. If we had politicians like this guy plays the saxophone we would all be in the garden of eden. Yeah I know I am trippin' but get the album and you will be too.
