村上春树的小说总是与爵士乐渊源颇深，在「爵士群像」一书中村上曾提到，他一直以为「South of The Border」这首歌是纳金高所唱，并且以此为基础写了「国境之南，太阳之西」这本小说，后来才发现纳金高根本没唱过这首歌，而村上笔下那个有些虚无、有些疑惑的边境异域，也许事实上纯粹仅在他的想像中存在著。严格说来，这张1992年推出的同名专辑，与村上的名著内容并无直接关係，但既是以「国境之南，太阳之西」为名，其中必有缘故。
爵士乐早期的Swing与Bop乐风一直是村上最喜爱的类型，参与这张专辑演出的三位大师正是爵士Bop乐派的顶尖老将。钢琴手Claude Williamson乐风承传Bud Powell，五○年代崛起至今一直是西岸爵士乐界的重要人物；贝斯手Andy Simpkins同样崛起於五○年代，曾任Sarah Vaughan巡迴演唱乐手，至今依然活跃於洛杉磯地区；鼓手Albert “Tootie” Heath更曾与John Coltrane、J.J. Johnson、Dexter Gordon、Herbie Hancock等爵士巨匠共事。由这三位老当益壮的乐手所共同架构的钢琴三重奏，当然流露出浓郁纯正的Bop韵味。
专辑中除了收录「Star Crossed Lovers」、「Corcovado」、「As Time Goes By」等多首耳熟能详的爵士经典名曲，最受瞩目的当然是两首专辑同名曲。令人意外的是，开头曲「South of The Border」展现的是一派轻鬆畅快；终曲「West of The Sun」则是极度浪漫抒情。看著村上小说聆听这张专辑，似乎有一种蒙太奇式的时空错置美感，似乎村上春树式的淡淡哀愁，都已昇华为流动飞舞的爵士音符，不管您是不是村上迷，都值得您聆听蒐藏。

The Fabulous Claude Williamson Trio captures the pianist in collaboration with bassist Duke Morgan and drummer Chuck Flores on a solid if unremarkable collection of standards. While Flores' subtle but insistent rhythms are particularly well matched to Williamson's graceful, feather-light touch, the session takes too few chances to soar -- both the material and the arrangements are regrettably pedestrian. Aficionados of the postwar Los Angeles jazz scene will nevertheless appreciate the skill and dexterity of the performances -- it's just a shame the album is nowhere near as fabulous as advertised.
